Pamplona is the capital of the Community of Navarra (Comunidad Foral de Navarra) and the centre of the basin of Pamplona. It was founded by the Roman General Pompey the Great at the site of a pre-existing settlement. Pamplona sits in the middle of the map of Navarra. It is located on a plateau 449 metres above sea level. It covers 23.55 square kilometres. Pamplona and its district is in a mountain belt with a height of around 1,000 metres. It runs along both banks of the River Arga.
It is the financial, commercial and administrative centre of Navarra. It is a significant nucleus of industrial activity, the automobile, wind power, building material, metal, meat, paper and graphic art sectors heading the list of importance. Education and health are the next most important bases of the local economy.
